In November 1994, a group of 87 foresighted Ethiopian individuals and enterprises came together to lay the foundation for what would become Hibret Insurance Company. With an initial paid-up capital of eight million Birr and an authorized capital of 25 million birr, the company embarked on its journey towards excellence.This collective effort and commitment from diverse stakeholders reflected a shared vision to create a reliable and leading insurance provider in Ethiopia.
The establishment of Hibret marked the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s insurance industry, setting the stage for growth, innovation, and professionalism in non-life insurance services.
Three years later, in 1997, we set a milestone by becoming the first private-sector insurer in Ethiopia to provide Life insurance, and also introduced the innovative With Profits Individual Life Policy.
Further more, in a historic milestone for Ethiopia’s insurance sector, Hibret Insurance made a strategic decision in October 2000 to acquire Lion Insurance a relatively younger and smaller player in the market. This move underscored Hibret’s dedication to expanding and consolidating its presence in the industry, setting a precedent for future growth and development.
At present, Hibret boasts a strong ownership growing its base of shareholders to 723. With plans to increase the paid-up capital to 1.5 Billion Birr by 2027, the company had successfully raised its capital to ETB 1,067 billion as of June 2024, solidifying its position in the insurance sector.
